%X In this article, the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) from Terra/MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) was used to estimate spectral emissivity using the algorithm developed by Valor and Caselles. Overall, estimated spectral emissivity values from forestry areas and pasture are in agreement with data obtained from literature. The cumulative water over bare soil and vegetation cover was the main reason of seasonal spectral emissivity variation. During the dry season, the spectral emissivity of the Paraiba do Sul river valley was quite different from the Mantiqueira mountain which was not observed during the rest of the year, when monthly rainfall is above 50 mm. The algorithm Valor and Caselles, applied to NDVI data from MODIS images can be used to estimate spectral emissivity over wide and homogeneous areas.
